Winston Update

The video Above is of Winston playing and cuddling with me, and chattering his teeth! it is a must watch, very sweet and cute.
 
  Winston has mycro (mycro is a bacteria in rats that makes it hard to breath, he has it at a young age and it looks pretty advanced.) and is on medication. I hope it helps him since hes such a nice boy. Hes only about 2 and a half to three months old. He likes to hide in your clothes or under a blanket. Hes a great rat! Please keep him in your prayers that his medication helps the mycro.

 Winston and Clyde live seperate now. It didn't seem like they were getting a long to well, so we seperated them. Winston has his own aquarium now in my room.

Winston is Going to The Vet

Hes going to the vet today. I suspect my rat, Winston may have myco from the shavings he was kept in at the pet shop. I say it all the time, NEVER use shavings, use my eco friendly home made bedding in which you can find in the video section on the how-to make it.

 Winston will have a physical exam, and be prescribed medicine as needed. I'll keep you updated.
BE MYCO ALERT. Myco is a bacteria very common in rats, that kills the rat at an early age and causes severe breathing problems. Myco symtoms are sneezing, weird noises, red discharge of the nose and or eyes, wheezing in sleep, making a "honk" noise, or a "grunt" noise, or any other strange behavior which makes it appear the rat is having trouble breathing. Consult a vet if your rat displays any of these warning signs. A drug call baytril is commonly prescribed. Choose your vet wisely!

Home Made Bedding

  I am researching on how to make home made rat bedding! I'm sure you know that its very expensive to buy bedding from the store. I am finding a solution. Cedar shavings and all kinds of other shavings beddings are a no no, from my experience, any shavings are horrible for the rat's lungs. When my mom and I breed rats, we would use torn up newspaper. Our rats didn't contract issues as did the pet shop rats in shavings. I was reading this Newspaper Bedding Idea on Yahoo Answers. I think its a pretty good idea. Here is a recipe for Home made bedding!

  What you need:
 Newspaper
 Water
 Bleach
 Strainer (Optional)

 If you have a lot of rats you can use a bath tub to make this beding. First, shred the newspaper into little stripes. Put it in hot water, in a bucket or the bathtub. Stir and squeeze several times to release the ink. Bleach the paper and let it sit for around 5 minutes. Then rinse and squeeze repeatidly and rinse. Then bring the newspaper outside in the sun, or in your living room to dry. Rip it up into smaller peices, smaller and smaller, and then let it completly dry. Sun drying is the best way. The ink will have mostly be out of the newspaper. When the paper dries tear it apart in little peices and put it in a bag.

To those who remember Cute Rats, you probably remember Happy my last rat that passed away back in Jan of 2010. May she rest in peace.
